"Are pheromones safe" is the wrong question to ask first, and the catalog answers why. Of the 299 products scored on this site, 142 publish no ingredient list. Forty-five publish nothing usable at all: no ingredients, no named compounds, just a scent description and a price.
You cannot assess the safety of something that will not tell you what it contains. So the useful question is narrower. Not "is this category safe," but "what is in this specific bottle, and can I check it?"
Are pheromones safe to put on your skin?
Probably, in the narrow sense that no adverse-event pattern has emerged from a category sold for decades. But "probably" is doing real work in that sentence, and the reason is not the pheromones.
Androstenone, androstenol, androstadienone, androsterone and estratetraenol appear nowhere in the EU cosmetics regulation. Not on the prohibited list, not on the restricted list, not in any Scientific Committee opinion. No published dermal safety assessment of these compounds as used in perfume could be located. Nobody has studied whether they irritate skin, because nobody has needed to: they are dosed too low to be the interesting variable.
How low is a fair question, and the honest answer is that nobody outside the manufacturers knows. The microgram figure that circulates in the community comes from vendors and forum consensus, not from independent assay. It is the reason the 125mg/oz claim is treated as a red flag rather than a selling point, but it is still an unmeasured number.
There is one loose thread. The EU prohibits "substances with androgenic effect" as a whole category, without naming any. The 16-androstene compounds are androgen-derived. Whether that category ban reaches a microgram of androstenone in a cologne has never been tested by a regulator or clarified by the Commission, and I am not going to claim these products are illegal in Europe on the strength of a category heading. It is an open question that the brands, not a review site, should be answering.
What is actually in a pheromone bottle?
Alcohol, water or oil, a cover fragrance, a preservative, and a trace of the compound you paid for. In that order by volume.
Take the highest-scoring product in the catalog. Voodoo for Men scores 8.8/10 and its published list reads: dipropylene glycol, water, SD alcohol 40-B, essential oils, polysorbate 20, fragrance. The pheromones are inside that last word.
That is the pattern almost everywhere. 85 catalog products list an alcohol, 92 list "fragrance" and 59 list "parfum" as a single undivided term. Under US labeling rules, that is completely legal: the regulation says outright that fragrance "may be listed as fragrance," no constituents required. The FDA also does not approve cosmetics before they reach shelves, and does not require companies to share safety data with it.
Congress told the FDA to fix the fragrance-allergen part of this in 2022. The proposed rule, RIN 0910-AI90, is more than two years past its deadline and has still not been published.
Why do the same five molecules keep appearing on labels?
Because European law forces them into the open, and a lot of these products are sold into Europe.
Count them across the catalog: linalool on 57 products, limonene on 56, geraniol on 48, citronellol on 42, coumarin on 39. These are not pheromones and no brand is bragging about them. They are fragrance materials the EU requires to be named individually once they pass 0.001% in a leave-on product, because each one is a recognized contact allergen.
The names are on the label as a warning system rather than a spec sheet. The EU's own estimate is that 1 to 9% of the population is allergic to at least one fragrance allergen, and the labeling exists so those people can avoid the one that affects them. The scientific basis is a 2012 Committee opinion that classified 82 substances as established human contact allergens.
The list is about to get much longer. Twenty-four fragrance allergens are declarable today. Regulation 2023/1545 adds 56 more, and the cutoff for placing non-compliant products on the EU market falls on 31 July 2026. Expect European labels to get noticeably denser from here, and expect that to look like a formula change when it is only a disclosure change.
If you have ever reacted to a scented product, this list is the most useful thing on the bottle. It is also the thing pheromone marketing never mentions.
The preservative flag worth checking yourself
One finding in the catalog is specific enough to name. Thirty-six Eye of Love listings publish ingredient lists containing methylisothiazolinone and 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one. Those are MI and MCI, a preservative pair with a documented sensitization problem: MI was the American Contact Dermatitis Society's allergen of 2013, named at the peak of a well-documented rise in reactions.
The EU response was to restrict both to rinse-off products only. The MCI/MI mixture went rinse-off-only from 16 July 2015, and MI alone followed from 12 February 2017, the regulator's stated reason being that no safe leave-on concentration had been demonstrated. Both remain rinse-off-only in the current consolidated regulation.
All 36 of those listings are sprays or gift sets containing sprays. A perfume is a leave-on product.
Here is the honest limit of what I can tell you. I have not tested these bottles, and vendor ingredient lists are often stale, copied between SKUs, or written for a different market than the one you are buying in. What I can say is that the list the seller publishes names two preservatives that European law keeps out of leave-on cosmetics, and that this is worth an email to the brand before you buy. Matchmaker Black Diamond scores 7.4/10 on formula and community standing. This does not change that score. It is a separate axis, and it is one the score was never built to measure.
Are pheromones safe if the brand publishes no ingredients?
Unknowable, which is the answer that matters. Two brands in the catalog publish an ingredient list on zero products: PherX across 20 listings, S1CK across 17.
The wider pattern is stranger than a simple good-and-bad split, and it inverts what the community believes about these brands.

Read the PheroStrong row against the Pheromone Treasures row. PheroStrong averages 5.1/10 and sits second from bottom on pheromone credibility, with not one product above 7.0, and it is the only brand that tells you the complete allergen picture on every single product. Pheromone Treasures is one of the most trusted names in the community for naming its molecules, and on 27 of its 29 products you have no idea what the carrier is.
Neither brand is hiding anything. They are answering different questions, because they are selling to different buyers. PheroStrong sells through EU retail, where the allergen list is mandatory. Pheromone Treasures sells to enthusiasts who want to know the compound and assume the carrier is inert.
Liquid Alchemy Labs is the one brand doing both, on 36 of 37 products, which is part of why it tops the scoring. It also earns the caveat: LAL's lists still end in "Fragrance (proprietary pheromone blend)." Thirty-nine catalog products use that construction. The best-disclosed product on this site still keeps its actual blend behind one word.
What about oxytocin, DHEA, and the ingredients that are not pheromones?
Twenty-three products list oxytocin. It does nothing, and that is the whole answer.
Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid peptide weighing about 1,007 daltons. Dermatology's 500 dalton rule holds that compounds much above 500 do not meaningfully cross intact skin, and oxytocin is roughly double that. The rule is a heuristic rather than physics, and it assumes unbroken skin. Even so, no study of topically applied oxytocin producing a behavioral effect could be found. Research doses go up the nose at 24 IU precisely because the skin is not a viable route.
Which makes it harmless to wear and dishonest to sell. An inert ingredient printed on the actives list is a marketing decision, and it reads the same whether it sits on a 7.1-scoring Pherazone formula or anywhere else.
Two PherX products list phenethylamine, which is also not a pheromone. One Pheromone Treasures listing is straight DHEA at $9.99, scoring 5.0/10. DHEA is a genuine hormone precursor, which puts it in a different bracket from the others: US law expressly excludes it from controlled-substance status, while in the EU it is not named anywhere in the cosmetics regulation and the category ban on androgenic substances is the likely reason it stays out of European cosmetics. Related compounds run into a harder wall. Pregnenolone is named directly in FDA drug rules covering topical hormone creams, which treat such products as unapproved new drugs.
How to vet a bottle in two minutes
Work backwards from what could actually go wrong, and check three things in order.
Start with the ingredient list, not the compound list. If there is no ingredient list, you are buying on trust, and that is a legitimate choice as long as you know you are making it. If there is one, scan for the allergen names. Linalool, limonene, geraniol, citronellol, coumarin, citral, benzyl salicylate, hexyl cinnamal, isoeugenol. If you have reacted to a scented product before, one of these is a likely candidate, and the label is where you find it.
Next, check the preservative against the format. Isothiazolinones belong in things you wash off.
Last, read the actives for anything that is not a pheromone. Oxytocin is inert and tells you about the marketing. A hormone precursor is a real ingredient and deserves a real decision.
None of this tells you whether a product works. That is a separate question with a separate and much messier evidence base. It tells you whether you can evaluate what you are putting on your skin, which is the part you can actually control.
Where this leaves the catalog
Nothing here changes a single Phero Score, and I want to be direct about why. The scoring rubric measures formulation credibility, compound disclosure, price transparency and community reception. It has never measured ingredient-list transparency or preservative choice, and after going through all 299 lists, that looks like a gap in the rubric rather than a gap in the products.
